Braehead is a newly refurbished area of Glasgow, Scotland. In the main business park, VeeLite Car park lighting was supplied to provide high illumination levels with good quality white light output. The 400w Car park Lights are installed on 10m Columns.

Because of the high efficiency of these Luminaires, poles can be spaced at wide intervals providing a saving in Capital and installation costs, as well on on-going energy and maintenance savings. The Luminaires have unique non-glare features so they can be installed next to busy roadways and on this Project, there is a busy dual carraigeway adjacent to 3 sides of the site.

The Car park Luminaires are constructed in robust die cast aluminium and have an attractive modern appearance to compliment the new Buildings.

Recent extensions at St Lomans Hospital used VeeLites low profile LED street light luminaires. These 90w LED Street lights on 5m Poles provide approx 30 Lux average with good unformity (c. 30%), low glare and high efficiency.

The high quality white light colour emitted has significant advantages over traditional HPS street lighting as it enables clear ‘daylight type’ recognition of colours which helps to identify Pedestrians, objects, etc. LED lighting also minimises maintenance and relamping with its expected life of 60,000 hours average (or typically 16 years). This is double the life time of HPS and 3 or 4 times the lifetime of Metal Halide.

As an option, LED Street lighting can also be controlled by Occupancy Sensor to provide significant energy saving and switching off when it is not required. Frequent switching is not a problem with LED lighting but is not possible with traditional HPS or Metal Halide lighting.

VeeLite’s illuminated LED Bollards are supplied in 15w version as standard. With optional Sensor control, they usually operate at 1.5w, providing significant energy savings as well as almost maintenance free lighting.

VeeLite also supplies LED Carpark Luminaires, LED Groundlights and LED Floodlights.

LED floodlights have higher reliability in comparison to incandescent and neon lights. The solid state light-emitting diodes (LED) produce a very bright light for a small amount of power. The distribution of a beam of light from an LED floodlight is “shaped” and directed by the reflector. Floodlighting is generally utilised outdoors and luminaries can be mounted on a pole, mounted onto the side of a building or installed at ground level.

Floodlights need to meet two very specific architectural requirements: they need to perform well in terms of area lighting requirements as well as being aesthetically in keeping with the function of the area. To illustrate: a marine loading dock would have a lesser aesthetic floodlighting requirement than a stadium or public roadway.

Ground level LED floodlights are often to light-up landscaping and architectural features. Such highlighting helps bring focus to specific structural details because light instinctively attract a viewers attention. It helps to avoid trying to highlight too many architectural elements at once because this creates the visual dissonance and destroys the “dramatic” appeal of focused lighting.

When choosing lighting for buildings it is important to be aware that under lighting the base and upper levels of a structure while focusing lighting on a mid-section of it can create a “floating” effect which is rarely visually appealing. A good rule of thumb would be to use smaller washes of lighting for the entire structure and to couple this with stronger LED floodlighting to emphasis desired feature or features.

Whether you are lighting a retail park, a parking lot or a small office complex you will want to maximise the amount of “usable” light (i.e.: light that falls on structures and pathways) and minimise light that spills into unused areas such as reflection to the sky or light scattered onto neighbouring areas. It is also useful to note that a high percentage of reflected light is reflected upwards. This can be exacerbated when up lighting a feature. It is best to avoid up lighting when the physical material that a structure is built on has a highly reflective surface.

Curved reflectors in an LED floodlight will result in a conical beam of light which is useful for targeted lighting. Rectangular reflectors form a more scattered bean and are often used to light up larger areas such as parking lots or sports fields. Also worth noting for such large areas: The costs of installing and maintaining secure lighting in large areas will be of primary concern because they are typically more expensive. Additional portions such as louvres and visors will also affect the shape of the beam.

For parking areas and roadways LED floodlights will usually be set atop high poles and it is best to choose energy efficient, strong scattered luminaries to maximise spacing between the units. Fewer poles incur lower installation and maintenance costs and the selected wattage (250 watt or less) will directly influence maintenance costs.

It is recommended to select a lighting supplier that can advise and substantiate the appropriate units for each individual lighting purpose.

Guidelines for safe and efficient warehouse lighting. Warehouse lighting is essential for smooth manufacturing operations, productivity and labor safety.

Health and Safety:

Health and safety regulations stipulate that adequate lighting be provided in factories and warehouses. This includes sufficient lighting for staff as well as a lack of glare and reflection. In work stations where intricate work is undertaken or where machinery is operated, this is particularly important. Additional lighting may be needed in some areas of the factory. It is important to consider not only the overall warehouse lighting, but also the requirements of individual work stations and processes. White light is recommended.

Warehouse lighting within the food and drug industries should avoid lights that attracts insects. Lighting that attracts insects such as houseflies can be installed alongside a targeted system to eradicate them from the factory.

Emergency lighting provides illumination should evacuation need to take place. The British standard provide the guidelines for emergency lighting . Most modern buildings will have emergency lighting installed during construction.

Some ballasts and transformers will emit a constant humming noise. These can be used in areas where there is constant background noise but not in areas that require complete silence. In many cases noise levels can be reduced by encapsulated ballasts.

In areas where dust can contaminate lighting, lights may need sealed optics. Explosion proof warehouse lighting may also be required, depending on the nature of the factory.

Industrial lighting should be manufactured to European standards.

There are numerous long established rules and regulations for warehouse lighting and health and safety. Energy efficiency standards however, are constantly adjusting in line with modern technology.

Energy efficient warehouse lighting:

There are a range of really significant benefits to installing energy efficient lighting in factories and warehouses. Increasingly, companies are considering their impact on the environment and taking responsibility for the environmental costs involved in energy generation. Efficient lighting minimises a company’s impact on the environment. Factory buildings that use outdated metal and T12 tube flouresent lights, waste energy and have higher electricity costs as a result.. These lights are set at full power regardless of whether areas are occupied or not.

Warehouse lighting that responds to occupancy and to daylight can be more efficient..These lights can either be switched off completely or dimmed down to low levels when a particular area is vacant or has enough natural light. Light can be controlled manually, according to timers or by integrated sensors that sense movement and light. Although there is an initial outlay involved in this type of lighting, the benefits will soon show in your lower electricity costs as less energy is wasted.

Another simple way to save energy is to change old fashioned lighting to energy efficient lamps and bulbs.

There is no one warehouse lighting system that will fit every business. Each case is different and in some cases bespoke lighting design may offer the best results. Specific Lighting design can target and enhance specific areas of the factory, according to your needs and priorities.
